Back pain can come from all kinds of disorders and injuries. You might experience back pain if you have:
The goal of OMT is to help your body restore itself, so you can function at your best without back pain. During your session, Dr. Shapiro uses manual force to realign your spine, joints, and skeleton. Once everything is back into proper alignment, pressure should be taken off of your nerves, which decreases the pain you feel.
The first session takes longer than future follow-up appointments. Plan for about an hour for Dr. Shapiro to spend time with you. He’ll need to gather your full family medical history, as well as your own personal medical history. It’s possible that he’ll order X-rays during this time, just so he can see if anything, in particular, is causing your back pain. If you know your back pain was caused by an accident or injury, bring in any other medical reports or imaging you may have. Once he’s able to diagnose the cause of your back pain, he’ll be able to put together a customized treatment plan for you.
Expect to have your first OMT treatment the same day as your first appointment. Depending on the extent of your condition, you might have to come back 2-3 times per week for several months. Even once your pain is gone, many patients like to continue to come in several times a month for routine maintenance and pain prevention.
You should feel an improvement right after your first session. Over the next few hours, or days, after your treatment, you’ll likely have significant pain reduction. You’ll continue to feel more long-lasting improvement with each OMT session that you have.
Dr. Shapiro might also recommend massage and medical marijuana services in combination with osteopathic manipulation.
